Marijuana & Synthetic THC Addiction & Dependence

We at Journey to Recovery Community Center regard marijuana just like any other mind altering substance that can cause dependence and negative consequences in a person’s life. Just as alcohol is legal yet addictive, marijuana is becoming the same (legal and readily available). Due to legalization in Vermont and other states, there is a growing tendency to view marijuana as somehow less harmful or addictive than other substances. That is not true.

We understand that some people cannot quit everything all at once, and tapering off and using marijuana as part of a path to health and recovery is sometimes part of a plan. We do not support the use of marijuana, except in extreme and rare cases (like cancer patients) in consultation with medical professionals. At Journey, we believe it is possible to live without long term dependence on any substance and we are here to help all people find their own path to that end.

More than 4 million Americans are reported to have a dependence on marijuana. It is the most commonly abused illicit (and increasingly legal)substance.

Research shows that approximately 30 percent of individuals who abuse marijuana have a problematic relationship with it. When marijuana use is reduced or discontinued, a person may notice signs of withdrawal, including difficulty sleeping, nightmares, appearing and/or sounding depressed, and/or demonstrating an urge to use marijuana again.
