We are in the midst of an opioid crisis here in the NEK, in Vermont and in all of the US. Something that started out as simple pain management has turned into an addiction that ruins lives. We at Journey understand how sneaky this particular dependence can be, and we are here to help.
At JTRCC, we support MAT (Medically assisted Treatment). We believe that many people can find a path that will eventually lead them to a life without MAT. We look at each person individually and help make a plan of recovery that will work for them. We understand that recovery is a lifelong process. We help keep every person moving forward at the pace that works for them.
The US Department of Health and Human Services defines opioid dependence as:
Physical and psychological reliance on opioids, a substance found in certain prescription pain medications and illegal drugs like heroin.
Opioids are prescribed to treat pain. With prolonged use, pain-relieving effects may lessen and pain can become worse. In addition, the body can and often does develop dependence. Opioid dependence causes withdrawal symptoms, which makes it difficult to stop taking them. Addiction occurs when dependence interferes with daily life. Taking more than the prescribed amount or using illegal opioids like heroin may result in death.
Symptoms of addiction include uncontrollable cravings and inability to control opioid use even though it’s having negative effects on personal relationships or finances.
TREATMENT
Treatment varies. Medications such as methadone or suboxone can help alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal and cravings. Pairing medication with inpatient or support programs generally has the most success.
Listen, our country would not be undergoing an Opioid Epidemic if it was easy to stop using these drugs. We at Journey understand how hard it is to stop. We know the destruction that being addicted can cause. We will welcome you, and help you find the right path to better for you. You are not alone, and life can get better. We will help.
